Business Case document is one of the deliverables in the Initiation phase of the Project Lifecycle. This is usually completed by the joint effort of the Business Analyst, Project Manager, Sponsor and Business SMEs.
A Business Case Document, often abbreviated as BC, serves multiple purposes within an organization.
Primarily, it provides a structured framework to:
a. Justify Investments: When an organization/company is considering launching a new project, investing in technology, or expanding operations, a BC helps to justify the need for resources and funding.
b. Evaluate Alternatives: It enables you to compare options, such as cost-benefit analyses, risk assessments, and potential returns, to make informed decisions.
c. Define Objectives: A BC helps to outline your proposed initiative’s objectives and expected outcomes.
d. Manage Risks: A BC also outlines potential risks and challenges upfront so the business can develop strategies to mitigate them, reducing the chances of project failure.
